IN-PERSON  SUMMER

DAY  CAMP

exceptional camp culture

How do we know we have the perfect Spanish immersion camp experience planned? Lots of ways, not the least of which is how many parents and members of our team have expressed how much they wish they could be a kid again and join in on the Kallpachay fun! Keeping group sizes small and tailoring them to age and level as we do helps us learn quickly how to tailor the fun to our campers’ needs, in turn speeding along the acquisition process. In this way we build in time for conversation—the keystone of the immersion model we follow.

In our camp environment we aim to reduce stress while still introducing fun challenges through play. From Chirp-in to Chirp-out, we pepper our day with community-building activities to prepare for and reflect on our learning; it’s how we set the tone for each day and recognize the progress we’ve made! Aside from teaching a second language, Kallpachay focuses on creating a camp culture in which we model and reinforce behavior that is inclusive, respects each child as an individual, and models new ways to practice caring and consideration. In highlighting these achievable goals, we support the healthy development of our campers, and this in turn keeps our space safe and lively!

covid protocols

Safety remains our top priority. We will be adhering to both CDC guidelines as well as day camp guidelines from the local health department. Between temperature checks, distancing, masks, vaccinated staff, thorough cleaning, limited indoor time, and the maintaining of small-group sizes within our camp pods, we are confident in our ability to keep you and your children safe this summer!

brain breaks & breakthroughs

From our cultural projects to our games, fitness time and celebrations, we always look to connect with our campers through joyful learning! Our daily routine is a healthy balance of restful, focused work interspersed with fun activities. Our projects are just some of the avenues by which we explore Hispanic culture—by engaging the senses, we heighten campers’ curiosity and do so through cooking, science, and the use of the large outdoor space we have this year (which we’re excited to use to create our first ever Kallpachay camper-run tianguis (marketplace) where kids will showcase and sell their wares, including items made during our cultural projects!)

Group of young children clapping and singing

If we’ve learned anything in our years as camp professionals (and we’ve learned a lot!), it’s that our campers love surprises. Our weekly Spirit Days keep things fresh and exciting for campers, enabling them to dress up in fun and creative ways as well as celebrate with scavenger hunts and other fun activities! Water play is also a fan favorite to help refresh and rejuvenate spirits. Sprinklers, water balloons, and cup races are some of the inventive ways we keep water-wise.

our location

Located in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains, our location at Oak Knoll Montessori School in Altadena benefits from the close-knit community vibes of the area, from the single-story buildings to its residential neighborhood surroundings. The main campus buildings are far from the street with a large driveway circle entry which allows for easy access to safe drop-off and check-in. This area is some of the outdoor space we will utilize to spread out for projects and play, but that’s only the beginning! We also have the playground, field, shaded patio tables, and kitchen at our disposal, all with the mountains as our backdrop.
